MALVOYANTE is pleased to present The Lighter the Suitcase (the more it can carry), an exhibition of recent work by Jenny Rask, opening 20 September in Echo Park, Los Angeles, CA.
Jenny Rask’s body of work is a deliberate inversion of visual mass and conceptual gravity, anchored by the saying: “the lighter the suitcase, the more it can carry.” Making use of ephemeral, weightless materials such as foil, gauze, wire, vellum, and fiber, Rask constructs sculptural forms that function less like monumental objects and more like permeable husks, shed skins, or delicate specimens. By stripping physical density from the work, the materials manifest their own identity thereby creating open, hollow voids that allow light to freely transmit through the mesh and vellum.
The material weightlessness makes space for complex and weighty themes: technology, biology, trauma, memory and the tension between protective shielding and vulnerability. Armored foil and open mesh form a literal and metaphorical transmission line referencing bodies tethered to machines and an iconography of care; stained vellum encloses a compost core and an emerging sprout, holding simultaneous realities of grief, decay, and renewal. By prioritizing capacity over physical volume, Rask’s fragile, translucent and porous sculptures act as spacious vessels, allowing the viewer to engage with their own quiet voids and the profound emotional weight that passes through them.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jenny Rask (b. Portland, OR), is a Lebanese-American artist whose practice transforms found, natural, and discarded materials into sculptural assemblages that explore material memory, ecological fragility, impermanence, and the human condition. Originally from Portland, Oregon, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oregon before beginning her career as a motion graphics designer and creative director for VH1 and MTV in New York City. The city’s visual intensity, along with its constant cycles of consumption and waste, helped shape her ongoing interest in object attachment, transformation, and the emotional lives of materials.
After relocating to Los Angeles and raising three children, Rask refocused her practice within the context of domestic life, developing a body of work that reimagines everyday materials as agents of care, repetition, memory, and resistance.
Rask holds a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from California State University, Long Beach. Her work has been exhibited at The Lodge, Torrance Art Museum, Wilding Cran in Los Angeles and in numerous other group exhibitions across California and New York. She is currently the curator at Tierra del Sol Gallery, a nonprofit gallery in West Hollywood that exhibits and supports the work of artists with developmental disabilities, and lives and works in Los Angeles.
