ABOUT THE ARTIST
Gary Cannone b. 1964, Chicago; lives and works in Los Angeles
1987 BFA from the University of Illinois, Chicago
1991 MFA from the University of Chicago
In 2012, after experiencing strange sensations in his body that reduced his manual dexterity, and made it difficult for him to stand and walk, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Unable to continue his earlier work, he stopped making physical objects. Cannone’s most recent work is broad-ranging in terms of media and includes sculptural works made from materials that belie their function; apparently functional objects (like fabricated signs) that deliver confused, but authoritative information; works on embroidery fabric that display lists or show impossible objects and optical illusions; and poems created on self-checkout grocery receipts constructed by juxtaposing the descriptions of the scanned items. His embroideries, doormats, furniture, and overhead objects focus our attention on obstacles in communication and movement, not as a source of frustration, but as space for a kind of poetry.
